The Difference Between Powder Coating and a Coat of Paint

Powder coating is a dry process from start to finish, whereas a coat of traditional paint starts wet and dries into a solid. In wet paint, an evaporating solvent keeps all the components in suspended liquid form until it dries, whereas powder coating consists of pigments, leveling agents, flow modifiers, and other additives. To apply powder coating, the product is sprayed onto the metal, which applies an electrostatic charge to each particle.

After the application of the powder coating, the ultraviolet heating process is designed to cause a chemical reaction in the coating, producing molecular chains with strong bonds resulting in an even, durable color and/or texture on your product.

Other Key Differences:

Powder coating is more flexible than wet paint and is more resistant to chipping

It’s easier to get an even layer with powder coating than wet paint

Color matching is easier with wet paint than powder coating (although it’s still doable!)

Best Materials for Powder Coating

Did you know that the metals we use to weld your custom designs are some of the best for powder coating? Typically, metals that hold electrostatic charges can withstand the temperatures used to apply powder coating. This includes:

Galvanized Steel

Stainless Steel

Some metal alloys are also suitable for powder coating, so you have options when it comes to fabricating your product and getting the durability, color, and finish you want.

The benefits of powder coating include:

Quick Turn Around

We’ve optimized our powder coating process to ensure high efficiency and quick turnaround times. Don’t wait weeks if you can have it in days.

Reduced lead time

Powder coating is a quick process, which allows you to reduce your lead time and get your products to market faster.

Reduced inventory costs

By completing the powder coating process more quickly, you can reduce the amount of time that your products spend in inventory, resulting in lower inventory costs on your end.

Powder coating is a highly durable finish that is resistant to chipping, scratching, and fading.

Environmental benefits

Powder coating produces fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than liquid paint, making it a more environmentally friendly option.

Powder coating is more cost-effective than other coating methods, particularly for high-volume production runs.
